Hey all you friends of the environment! This is Dudley the Spoonbill back again to share something very exciting with you! I know you all have probably been wondering what I've been up to for the past few months, so I've decided to post some pictures of my adventures! These pictures show me and my Never Everglades friends out working to save our environment. There are even some pictures and clips about Earth day (the Trash Monster is our very own Charity Miller)! I hope these pictures encourage you to keep doing your part to save our environment.

Hi all. This is Dudley the Spoonbill! I want to show you just a few pictures from my Mail Bag that shows just how much students enjoyed our show. More and more people are taking part in making our environment a clean, happy place to live, including Miami Dade County! Their Department of Environmental Restoration Management plays a great part in not only helping our environment, but in making sure that all my Never Everglades friends and I can visit schools to tell you how you can do your part to save the environment! Isn't that cool?

Quick Fire Questions with Josh Dobarganes (actor in The Three Mess-keteers)

Today I sat down with Josh Dobarganes, who currently appears in FTF's production of The Three Mess-keteers, and asked him my FTF Quick Fire Questions!

Dudley: Hey Josh!

Josh: Dudley!

Dudley: Are you ready for the FTF quick fire?

Josh: I was born ready!

Dudley: I know you were! #1. How did you get cast in this show?

Josh: Well, I went to the auditions that the Fantasy Theatre Factory company was having for all of their shows for the year, and then I was asked to come back again the next week to audition again. Then, I got a phone call from the company saying they had liked my audition, and then they asked me to play the Dirty Duke in “The Three Mess-kateers”. I said yes, of course, and that’s how it happened.

Dudley: What kind of artistic training and experience have you had?

Josh: I have been training in the theatre since the tender age of 10. I took theatre every year of middle school and high school, advancing further and further every year. Going from Drama 101 to intermediate theatre to advanced theatre to magnet theatre to magnet honors theatre to a full ride through college for a BFA degree in theatre from Florida International University. I have performed in over 50 plays, 2 independent short films, and I have also recorded a professional original song.

Dudley: Who are you in this play? Can you tell us more about your characters?

Josh: I play the Dirty Duke and King Compost. Well, King Compost is a very nice man who likes to eat sugar free marshmallows and drink purified water all day long. He is the King of a beautiful environmental paradise called the Kingdom of Clean. He loves everyone and everything…except for the Dirty Duke, his Nasty Knights, and of course POLLUTION! The Dirty Duke is the complete opposite. He is a very mean, sarcastic, and flamboyantly annoying guy who did not get enough hugs as a kid. All he likes to eat is fast food and all he likes to drink is soda. He is overweight and has many cavities. He also cannot get out of the 80’s with that ridiculous mustache he has. He wants to pollute the world and rule over all the garbage in the land. He is bad. He is very bad……bad.

Dudley: Do you enjoy playing the villain of the show? Why?

Josh: Of course I do! There is no more fun an actor can have than playing a bad guy. You see, since people are generally good hearted, they don’t usually say the things and do the things a villain would say or do. So, this gives us actors who are fortunate enough to get these parts a very exciting challenge. We are allowed to be bad on stage in front of people…and we don’t get punished for it. It’s a bunch of fun.

Dudley: This show is about saving the environment. Your character doesn’t care too much about the environment. Do you think of yourself as a “Mess-kateer” or the “Duke” in real life when it comes to saving the environment?

Josh: I used to be more like the “Duke” when I was a kid. Then, when I learned about how important it is to save and preserve our environment, I became more of a “Mess-kateer”.

Dudley: What message do you want your audience to leave with after the show?

Josh: Now that YOU know how important it is, you have no excuse. Reduce. Re-use. Recycle.

Dudley: What is your favorite part of the show? Why?

Josh: My favorite part of the show is when Wandalf casts his “Boogie-oogie octopus” spell on Aramis. I love the song and I love Aramis’ dancing. It makes it all worth-while.

Dudley: How has the show been received by audiences? Have there been any surprise reactions from the audience?

Josh: Everyone seems to really like the show. The kids participate much more than I ever thought they would. I’m just happy that everybody likes it. I’m just happy to be here.

Dudley: How and why did you become an actor?

Josh: Ever since I could speak I have been doing impressions of everyone and everything. I loved watching movies. That’s almost all I did for much of my childhood. I thought the idea of someone changing who they are to play someone else in front of other people was the coolest idea ever. When I saw that I could join a class on it right after elementary school, I signed up right away. Ever since then, I have not gone more than 3 months without acting in a play. I cannot imagine life without it. It is my life. I eat it, drink it, live it everyday of my life. It’s my favorite thing in the whole wide world.

Dudley: When not in theatre, what are you most likely doing?

Josh: Sleeping. Also, exercising, being a waiter, reading, watching movies, watching theatre, visiting New York, and doing my part to save the environment.

Dudley: Well, Josh that was the Quick Fire! Thank you so very much!

I love going to the mail box this time of the year. It is always filled with letters and drawings from students who have just seen our show. Today was no exception.... Mrs. Rudock from Eagle Point Elementary sent us this letter.

Quick Fire Questions with Nancy Martin (actress in Bananas)

Today I sat down with Nancy Martin, who currently appears in FTF's production of Bananas, Books and Pancakes, and asked her my FTF Quick Fire Questions!

Dudley: Hey Nancy!

Nancy: Hey Dudley!

Dudley: Are you ready for the FTF quick fire?

Nancy: Ready!

Dudley: Ok… here we go! #1. How did you get cast in this show?

Nancy: About two years ago, I auditioned for FTF at their season auditions. At the time, I was cast in Cinderella: A Fractured Fairy Tale. Since then, I've done other shows with FTF, which include Bananas, Books, and Pancakes.

Dudley: What kind of artistic training & experience have you had?

Nancy: Well, I've always enjoyed performing. Growing up, my mother taught and encouraged us to learn all we could about the performing arts. We (my siblings and I) had piano and violin lessons. We were in every show our church and/or school ever had. In the 6th grade, I joined the drama club and stuck with it all the way through high school. When I entered college, I decided to major in theatre performance. That's where I received special training on voice, movement and literature.

Dudley: This is not your first year doing Bananas, Books and Pancakes. When did you start performing this show? Why did you choose to reprise your role? How is this year different from the other seasons?

Nancy: This is my second year doing Bananas. I had so much fun the first time I did the show that there was no question I was definitely going to be part of it in the 2008-2009 season. I think, more than any other FTF show, Bananas allows you to use your imagination to recreate the characters and stories being told.

Dudley: Who are you in this play? Tell us about your character(s).

Nancy: I play: Rosie (She's a second grader who looks like an angel, but has prankster tendencies), Ms. Tyler (Ronald Morgan’s second grade school teacher. She’s also a robot!), Grandma (She’s Michael’s Nana. Grandma likes to take care of baby Nicholas. She tells wonderful stories when she babysits little Nick.), and Mr. Gorilla (My favorite character to play! He’s a fun loving gorilla who loves making new friends. Mr. Gorilla is extremely curious. He’s constantly learning new things. You can always find him at school!!!).

Dudley: Are there particular challenges you have faced in playing different characters in a single show?

Nancy: Yes!!! I found the role of Grandma very difficult at first. It’s one thing to take on the physical and vocal qualities of the character you’re playing, in my case a little old granny, but I also had to learn more about relationships. Granny interacts with baby Nicholas. The hardest part for me was imagining how little Nick would react to everything going on around him. I also had to explore the relationship between Grandma and Nick. Luckily for me, I have the amazing talents of Andy Jean Gilles, who plays the voice of baby Nick. His characterization of Nick has allowed me to come up with great ideas and interactions.

Dudley: What is your favorite part of the show? Why?

Nancy: That’s a tough one to answer! Andy, Thomas and I have soooo much fun playing off each other onstage. My favorite part changes on a show-by-show basis because the show itself is never the same. We discover something new in the script, or in the relationship between our characters and BAM!- a funny moment is created.

Dudley: How has the show been received by audiences? Have there been any surprise reactions from the audience?

Nancy: The show has done very well! This is an interactive show and so I LOVE IT when the audience participates with what’s happening on stage. I know it’s a good show when I hear kids laughing. It’s surprising to hear the reactions of our audience change from school to school.

Dudley: How and why did you become an actor?

Nancy: Being a performer is something I’ve always wanted to be. I love it. I love art, theatre, music, dance and culture. I think if there’s something you feel passionate about, you owe it to yourself to go out there and fulfill that passion. I decided early on that I would try to make a living out of being an artist. I went to school to learn about theatre and performance. In 2004, I graduated and have been working as a professional actor ever since!

Dudley: When not in the theatre, what are you most likely doing?

Nancy: I’m most likely in the gym, taking a dance class, reading a book or serving tables on the side.

Dudley: Final quick fire question. It has been rumored that you have your nose in a book back stage before shows. What have you been reading?

Nancy: Ha! This is very true. I’ve just finished “The Twilight Series” by Stephanie Meyer. I’m currently reading “The Other Boleyn Girl” by Philippa Gregory. My work related read is “New Playwrights: The Best Plays of 2003”.

Dudley: Thanks Nancy! Looks like you survived!

We get a lot of questions and comments from our fan mail. I thought I would meet up with one of our actors from Bananas, Andy Jean-Gilles, and see if he could answer any of your awesome questions.

Dudley: Hey Andy!

Andy: Hey Dudley! What’s up?

Dudley: As you know we get a lot of letters at FTF from students about the show Bananas, Books, and Pancakes. Some of them have asked some questions. Do you think you could answer some of them for us?

Andy: Sure! It would be my pleasure.

Dudley: Ok, our first question comes from Soha S. who asks: “How long have you been doing this?”

Andy: That’s a great question, Dudley! We have been performing the show Bananas, Books, and Pancakes since November 5, 2008. To date we have performed this show 34 times. But we have been acting and performing well before that. I have been acting since I was in elementary school, just like you guys at Home/ School. So if you add it all together… around 13 years.

Dudley: Wow! That is a lot of shows and a long time. And you guys are not even close to being done yet, are you?

Andy: No, you are right there. We will take a break for Thanksgiving and then its back to performing everyday till the 19th of December.

Dudley: Needless to say you guys work hard and that actually brings us to our next letter from Michelle Z. who writes: “It looks like you guys work really hard on acting.”

Andy: Yes, we do. We, as actors, have to first memorize lines, and block the scene. Then we have to perform every morning with lots of energy to help inspire you guys to read. But they say when you love doing something, you don’t mind the hard work, and I don’t mind the hard work.

Dudley: And we are glad that you don’t mind working hard to inspire these students to read. Actually, Alison R. responded to your READ, READ, READ chant at the end of the show with: “Ok I’ll read more books. I’m reading and trying to get my AR (Accelerated Reader program) goal. Last time I didn’t. I’m really trying to get the Silver Award this time.”

Andy: That’s great that you’re reading more! Good luck on achieving your AR goal. I know some times it may seem hard but it is definitely something within your reach. Keep going for it! Let us know when you do!

Dudley: Yeah, we wish you the best of success on getting the silver Alison. Hey Andy! Younique has a really interesting question for you: “Have you ever tried banana pancakes before?

Andy: (laughs) No, I have to say I have not tried banana pancakes. But I am sure Billy Botter the cafeteria cook would not have a problem whipping up a few hundred banana pancakes. Oh, Dudley we have to find a banana pancake recipe to share with our friends here.

Dudley: Leave it to me. I will be sure to find a yummy one that will make Billy Botter proud! And now for our last comment, Jordan B. writes: “Thanks for the Bunnicula book. I will keep reading but you will have to make me a promise that you will rock on to every show!”

Andy: Well, we need to send a big thank you to the Jim Moran Foundation for the Bunnicula books. Because of their donation you and 11,999 other students in Broward Co will be reading more. And (laughs) It’s a promise! You keep reading Jordan and we’ll keep rocking every show. Cool Man!

Happy Birthday Pam!

Pam is Fantasy Theatre Factory's FABULOUS Scheduling Coordinator. If you were to call FTF to book a show or a fieldtrip - you would need to talk to her! Pam is also in charge of making sure all the different shows and actors end up at the right performance location. FTF could not get by daily if it were not for her! Thanks Pam for being a part of FTF!

We celebrated Pam's "21st" Birthday today (a day early)! Of course we had to do it in FTF fashion making her wear a Fabulous Pink Birthday Hat.

Coming Soon... The Adventures of Curious George!

A first rate adventure story about Curious George, a little monkey who is too curious for his own good. The show follows George’s escapades as he travels from Africa to his new home in America. George finds himself running from “monkey eating alligators”, riding his new bike, going to his first day of school, visiting the doctor, and even taking a ride to outer space! Everything George sees is new and exciting and children love accompanying him as he explores his new environment. Although his curiosity gets him into trouble, with the help of his guide and guardian, The Man in the Big Yellow Hat, everything turns out just fine. Your children will talk about Curious George for weeks. This is the show for your tiny tots to see!

So today I thought I would drop in on the cast of Bananas, Books, and Pancakes to see if I could answer that question.

Free Books to Broward Students - Thank You Jim Moran Foundation!

Fantasy Theatre Factory would like to offer a special thank you to the Jim Moran Foundation for providing performances and 12,000 books to students in select Broward County Public Schools. After each performance of Bananas, Books, and Pancakes, FTF actors will hand out copies of books highlighted at each performance. Students will have the opportunity to see, literally, books jump off the stage and into their hands. I am so excited to announce to everyone Fantasy Theatre Factory's 2008-2009 Environmental Challenge!

As you know, saving the environment is a really BIG job. It takes dedication and sometimes it may seem like a lot hard work. But the rewards are endless. There are so many things for us Flowen Rangers, Secret Agent Recruits, and Mess-Keteers to do. But we can't do it alone.

WE NEED YOU to join us!! Let's see what a difference we can all make when we work together as a team to Save the Earth!

This 2008-2009 school year our goal is to recycle 10,000 cans and reduce water consumption by saving 20,000 gallons of water.

I think we can do it! And a whole lot more - If we work together as a team!

Print out our Environmental Challenge sheet.

Color in the recycle symbol and water drop each time you reach a mile marker. Once your Water Drop and Recycle Symbol is filled, mail them to Fantasy Theatre Factory. Your can track your progress and the progress of the other students involved in the challenge here. Get your friends and family involved to save more! Together, we can make a difference!

The Kingdom of Clean is in despair due to the dastardly Dirty Duke who has trashed the territory, polluted the ponds and fouled the forests with his rubbish. King Compost must call upon his trusted Three Messketeers: Porthos, Athos and Aramis, to rescue his revered resources and exact environmental justice. The Messketeers’ quest takes them to the three corners of the Kingdom of Clean where the Dirty Duke has deployed his Nasty Knights to dump and destroy the natural treasures of the kingdom. Through quick action, clever thinking and of course some creative clean up the Messketeers are able to put a stop to the Dirty Duke's deeds and rescue the Kingdom of Clean.

First Run: November 10 - December 19, 2008

Second Run: March 16 - May 1, 2009

Starting November 10, 2008, Fantasy Theatre Factory will be presenting this show “Three Mess-keteers” in over 30 Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Over 18,000 students will see this show in the next 2 months!

FTF performers bring to life selections from award winning children's authors. Music, mime, acting, comedy, and costumes enhance each story. This is a great program for students to become involved in the reading process. Students will race to the library for more books by these children's authors! Program may include selections from A Terrible Day by Patricia Reilly Giff where a child's bad day becomes a good day. Three great stories by number one children's author Judith Viorst: Rosie and Michael, about two children that discover the true meaning of friendship; The Tenth Good Thing about Barney, a child's story of acceptance and hope; and Lizzy Petufsky, a love poem from the fourth grade. Other selections include Jack Prelutsky's Pancakes a story about a school cafeteria cook that recites poetry about pancakes and James Howe's The Day the Teacher went Bananas.

This show is available November 10 - December 19, 2008 for in-school performances.

Little Monster Tales - Backstage at the JCC

Every 3rd Saturday of the month, drop your children off at Fantasy Theatre’s The Factory Lab where they’ll play fun theatre games, and enjoy pizza all in a fun and safe environment. So, go ahead and have a night out for yourself for a change and rest assured that your children are having just as great a time as you are here with the professionally trained FTF staff. We had another busy day today! Our A Fab Karaoke show was traveling everywhere performing in 3 different locations (Lauderhill Elementary, YMCA-Bethune Elementary, and YMCA- Park Ridge Elementary). Comedy With A Twist Of Lemon was at ASP- Broward Estates. We also were teaching it up at the Arts Residency Workshops at Artspark.

Our actors (Larry, Andy, and Bob) engage in stories across a variety of genres, cutting the stories short so as to entice you to read the book yourself. Welcome to Dudley's Corner! As you may already know... My name is Dudley R. Spoonbill. You may recognize me from Fantasy Theatre Factory’s environmental fairytale, Never Everglades. I wanted to create a place where all my friends can come to continue the adventures of Fantasy Theatre Factory productions. Not only will we talk about the shows, but also reading books and the learning about the environment (which a lot of our shows are about)! I will also be an ace reporter getting first hand interviews with the actors. (So, if you have any questions for the actors send them to me and your question maybe asked). Here at Dudley’s Corner you will continue your Fantasy Theatre Factory adventures with photos from performances, fan mail from kids just like you, fun activities that will expand on the show you just saw, or even get involved with our Environmental and Reading Challenges. I hope you will come back often to join in on the fun. I love to get Fan Mail so feel free to let me (or any of our other characters) know what your favorite part of the show was.
